The IT checklist for dental clinics
Ten checks every dental office should pass. Based on the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security's baseline controls, written for clinics.
Backups include imaging
X-rays, panos and scans are large and stored separately. Make sure they are backed up, not just the practice database.
One backup copy is off-site
A copy in the same building does not survive fire, flood or ransomware.
A restore was tested in the last 6 months
A backup is only real once you have restored from it.
Two-factor login is on for email and remote access
Stolen passwords are the most common way in.
Updates are scheduled after hours
Patches close known holes. Schedule them so they never restart a PC mid-appointment.
Patient Wi-Fi is separate
Patients should never share a network with practice software, imaging or payment terminals.
The team had phishing training this year
Most attacks start with one email.
The firewall is managed and monitored
A firewall nobody watches is a lock nobody checks.
There is a written plan for an outage day
Who to call, how to keep seeing patients, how to restore.
There is one number to call, even for vendor issues
When a sensor stops connecting, staff shouldn't have to work out whose problem it is.
